Current migration flows from Ukraine
We collect data on current flows of migrants from Ukraine into other European countries in response to the conflict.
Headline statistics
- The UNHCR records 5,000,000+ refugees from Ukraine across Europe.
- This amounts to around 13% of the Ukrainian population (estimated by Eurostat as at 2021).
- 3,000,000+ refugees have registered for temporary protection in Europe.
- The number of people who fled Ukraine since February 24 is estimated at 8,000,000+, while 2,000,000+ have returned to the country since February 28.
- The number of refugees crossing the border from Ukraine into a neighboring country each day peaked at around 200,000 on March 7 but has since declined to around 35,000 as of mid-February.
- Since early May the number of people returning to Ukraine is growing and has been roughly 30,000 per day as of mid-February.

Data from UNHCR. Figures reflect cumulative number of refugees crossing an Ukrainian border to or from any neighbouring country since February 24, 2022. Net outflow is measured as the difference between border crossings from and back into Ukraine.Around 5 million people have been displaced from Ukraine into Europe according to data assembled by UNHCR. This corresponds to around 13% of the total Ukrainian population. Roughly 8 million people left Ukraine, while 2 million have since returned to the country.
The largest outflow of people occurred on March 7 when over 200,000 fled Ukraine in only one day. Since then, the size of these refugee flows out of Ukraine has declined since the end of March and recently roughly 35,000 left Ukraine each day.
The number of people returning to Ukraine has increased from roughly 20,000 per day at the end of March to around 30,000 per day by mid-February.
