An overview of the characteristics of the Ukrainian population.

This page describes characteristics of the population in Ukraine to understand the demographics of Ukrainian refugees. In particular, we report some key demographic information and labor market outcomes, such as the age structure and labor force participation.

Key demographic statistics

  • Population: 41.6 million people living in Ukraine as of January 2021; 46% are men and 54% are women
  • Since the 1990s, Ukraine's population has been decreasing by an average of over 350,000 every year
  • Average age: 42 years old, 39 for men and 45 for women
  • Ethnicity: More than 130 ethnic groups were reported as of 2001; 78% reported being of Ukrainian origin and 17% of Russian origin
  • Literacy rate: Almost 100% as of 2012
  • Educational attainment: 31% have tertiary education, 51% have secondary education, 14% have primary education, and 3% have no education as of 2001
  • Labor force participation rate: 62%
  • Average monthly wage: 626 USD (16,912 UAH) for men and 511 USD (13,802 UAH) for women
